Description
Two technicians use microscopes to identify larval fish samples in the sorting Laboratory. The photograph relates to prj_p_000080, which was published as Figures 3 in Sport Fishery Research, 1968 (Resource Publication 77). Issued in May 1969, the photograph caption was “Technicians handle the initial sorting of larval fish collections and prepare records for electronic data processing.” The technicians, including those depicted in this image, are sorting larval fish collected from the south Atlantic in February of 1968. The collection survey involved hundreds of sampling stations along the continental shelf. A description of this survey and the Laboratory’s approach to sorting the high volume of larval fish samples collected is described by marine biologists Wallace (Wally) G. Smith and Peter Berrien on pages 6 and 7 of the annual report.
