This close-up photograph of the front exterior of the Sandy Hook Laboratory captures the still smoking remains of the building. The Laboratory, which had been occupied since 1960 as a federal marine science laboratory, was destroyed by an arson fire on September 21, 1985. After the fire, the Laboratory's future remained in limbo until August 1987, when NOAA agreed to keep the facility at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
