Lionel A. Walford Library, James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
Judy Berrien, a Laboratory librarian, consults files in the Laboratory’s temporary Library. After arson destroyed the Laboratory campus on September 21, 1985, the Library was relocated to the east wing of Building 74, which is shown in this photograph. In addition to destroying years of scientific research and causing millions of dollars of damage, the Laboratory’s prestigious marine science library was decimated by the fire. Over 33,000 volumes of scientific literature, including rare books and Dr. Walford's personal papers and books were lost. Through donations from citizens, civic groups, scientists, and other libraries, much of the collection was rebuilt and the Library was able to continue to provide services in Building 74 to Laboratory scientists very soon after the fire.
