Lionel A. Walford Library, James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
This image provides a view of the newly constructed James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory from Magruder Road. Construction commenced after a 1989 groundbreaking and the completed building was dedicated on October 18, 1993. The Laboratory was named after James J. Howard, a legislator representing the New Jersey 3rd district in the House of Representatives. Representative Howard was a strong proponent of the Laboratory remaining in New Jersey after the original Laboratory campus was destroyed by arson in 1985. The 35,000 square foot building cost approximately $19 million to construct and included state-of-the-art marine research facilities and a 32,000 gallon salt water aquarium. The Laboratory construction and renovation of Building 74 (not shown) was funded by the State of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and was designed to be consistent with the historic Fort Hancock district of Sandy Hook.
