Three workers place a steel conveyor roller on a wooden ladder to transport boxes of library books to the second floor of Building 74. Construction materials used in the renovation can be seen throughout the building’s courtyard. The library was temporarily relocated to the second floor of Building 74 after a fire destroyed the original Sandy Hook Laboratory building in September 1985 and then across the street to the newly constructed Laboratory building during the Building 74 renovation. The Library’s holdings were almost entirely lost during the fire, but through the generous donations of other libraries, individuals, scientists, and local organizations much of the collection was restored.
