The Laboratory collection features both historical and current images of the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory facilities, as well as its staff at work, Laboratory Open Houses, and images of the Laboratory's first director, Dr. Lionel A. Walford.
Lionel A. Walford Library, James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
Dr. Walford’s three daughters (two far left and one immediately right of the portrait); the Laboratory Director at the time (directly left of portrait), Carl J. Sindermann; the former Laboratory Director, Jack Pearce (second from right); and the portrait artist, Roberta Carter Clark (far right) are photographed with a portrait of Dr. Walford. The Laboratory commissioned the portrait shortly after Walford’s death in 1979 to commemorate the man who helped launch the nation’s first federal laboratory dedicated to sport fishing and fisheries research and who served as its first Director from 1961 to 1971 and Senior Scientist from 1971 to 1974. The portrait artist, Clark, was formerly a Laboratory illustrator and writer. The portrait of Dr. Walford was prominently displayed in the Library as Dr. Walford was an enthusiastic supporter of libraries and even donated his own collection of books and personal papers to build the Laboratory library collection in the early 1960’s. The portrait, unfortunately, was one of the casualties of the September 15, 1985 fire that destroyed the main Laboratory building, its library, the Walford donations, and years of scientific research. When interviewed by the Asbury Park Press shortly after the fire, Laboratory scientist John O'Reilly said that “The heart (of Walford) died in the fire.”
