Lionel A. Walford Library, James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
A photograph of Dr. Lionel Albert Walford, the Director of the Sandy Hook Marine Laboratory from 1961 to 1971, at his desk.. A prolific author and esteemed biologist, Dr. Walford advocated strongly for the creation of a marine laboratory dedicated to sportfish research and was subsequently appointed as the director of the new Sandy Hook Marine Laboratory when it was funded by Congress in 1960 as an entity of the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Sport Fisheries. When the Laboratory became a NOAA facility in 1971, Dr. Walford assumed the position of Senior Scientist until his retirement in 1974. During his tenure as Director and Senior Scientist, Dr. Walford oversaw innovative marine research with a small staff and modest budget. He was not only a ceaseless advocate for the Laboratory during his tenure as Director, but was also a strong supporter of marine education and citizen scientists and helped found the Laboratory’s neighboring organizations, the American Littoral Society and the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, to aid these values. In 1974, he was appointed Executive Director at the Consortium, at which he worked until his passing. Prior to serving as the Director of the Laboratory, Dr. Walford was the chief of the Branch of Fishery Biology of the U.S. Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service and well-known for his book "The Living Resources of the Sea" published in 1958. After Dr. Walford’s passing in 1979, the Laboratory honored him by titling its annual convocation, the "Lionel A. Walford Memorial Convocation" and the Library, which he helped build through donations of his own papers and books, was named The Lionel A. Walford Library.
