The Laboratory collection features both historical and current images of the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory facilities, as well as its staff at work, Laboratory Open Houses, and images of the Laboratory's first director, Dr. Lionel A. Walford.
Children and adults don't need much encouragement from Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) Open House volunteers to get their hands wet and slimy in the touch tanks! The touch tanks, which are filled with local species, are one of the Laboratory’s most popular exhibits and MAST students were kept busy answering questions from visitors who wanted to know all about the marine species on display. The Laboratory's 2010 Open House was held in conjunction with the Sandy Hook Ocean Fun Day, an annual event jointly sponsored by the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and New Jersey Natural Gas. Over 1,200 visitors toured the Laboratory, viewed exhibits, and got their hands dirty in the touch-tanks and other hands-on activities. Volunteers, which included family of Laboratory staff, MAST students, and Laboratory interns, helped make the Open House enjoyable and informative for visitors.
