Lionel A. Walford Library, James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
Laboratory staff aboard the "Artificial Reef Project" barge push scrap tires into the water at the Atlantic Beach artificial reef site. The barge, stationed at the Sandy Hook dock, was purchased for the creation of the experimental artificial reef at Atlantic Beach, which is located off the southern coast of Long Island. In cooperation with the State of New York, the Laboratory deposited 30,000 tires arranged in different units at the site from June to October of 1968.
