About this collection

The Laboratory collection features images of facilities including buildings and laboratories, as well as staff at work, and images and aerial views of historic Fort Hancock, New Jersey and the Sandy Hook peninsula that forms part of the National Park Service Gateway National Recreation Area. From 1961 to 1985, the laboratory was housed in the former Ft. Hancock Army hospital, located on the bay in an area named "Officers Row." In 1985 a devasting fire destroyed that building and staff was moved to another location, until the construction of a new, and renovation of an older building in 1993.
