About the collections

This Legacy Research Gallery was supported by the NOAA Preserve America Initiative, a Federal initiative aimed at preserving, protecting and promoting the rich heritage of our Nation.

September 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the Laboratory dedication, and a half century of fisheries research. This collection offers an historical perspective on key research initiatives as a means to celebrate this milestone.

The project was undertaken to increase public awareness, support and understanding of the laboratory and its work, as well as its unique inception as a recreational fish species research institution.

The primary focus was preserving and enhancing historic NOAA assets produced and acquired by the Howard Laboratory. The content of this gallery explores early laboratory research made accessible through the selection, digitization and preservation of still images in the Lionel A. Walford Library.
